Joanne C. Letwinch, now retired, taught elementary school for 36 years as a classroom teacher and language arts specialist. During her career, she instituted classroom programs in integrated thematic instruction, cooperative learning, multiple intelligences, and authentic assessment. She also developed interdisciplinary thematic units based on literature, science, social studies, and language skills. She taught in New Jersey's Haddonfield Public Schools, where she initiated the Young Astronaut Program as well as Berkeley Twp. Public Schools, Bayville, NJ and Glassboro Public Schools.
In Haddonfield, Joanne was her school’s Teacher of the Year in 1991, and as a member of the Young Astronauts of New Jersey Executive Council, she received the NJEA Distinguished Service to Education Award, also in 1991.
Joanne was a professional development presenter for her
school district in reading and science and made numerous
presentations at conferences and conventions for
organizations such as the National Science Teachers
Association, New Jersey Science Teachers Association,
National Geographic, and West Jersey Reading Council.
